Vaping vs cigarettes: which is more harmful?

Vaping and smoking are often compared in terms of health risks, with research suggesting that while vaping may expose users to fewer toxic substances than traditional cigarettes due to the absence of combustion, it still delivers nicotine and other chemicals that can irritate the lungs and affect overall health, making both habits potentially harmful and raising ongoing concerns among health experts about their long-term impact.

During IPL 2026, a recent match between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings drew attention after Riyan Parag was reportedly seen vaping in the dressing room. The video quickly went viral, sparking discussion since smoking and similar activities are strictly prohibited inside dressing rooms and stadium premises, with violations potentially leading to disciplinary action.

What vaping means

Vaping refers to the use of battery-powered devices that heat a liquid to produce an aerosol, which is then inhaled. These liquids may contain nicotine, flavouring agents, and other chemicals.

Health effects of vaping

Experts note that short-term effects can include throat irritation, coughing, breathing discomfort, dizziness, and increased heart rate. Long-term impacts are still being studied, but concerns remain around possible damage to the lungs, heart, and potential exposure to harmful or cancer-causing substances.

Vaping vs smoking

Compared to traditional cigarettes, vaping may involve fewer toxic substances because there is no burning involved. However, it still exposes the lungs to harmful chemicals and metals that can cause irritation and tissue damage.

Relative risk

While smoking is generally considered more harmful due to combustion-related toxins, medical experts stress that neither smoking nor vaping is safe, as both can increase the risk of respiratory and lung-related diseases.

Safety of nicotine-free vapes

Even products labeled nicotine-free are not risk-free. Although they avoid nicotine addiction, the vapour itself can still contain harmful chemicals and flavouring agents that may affect health.

Role in quitting smoking

Vaping is not officially approved as a smoking cessation method. Some people use it to reduce cigarette consumption, but evidence on long-term safety is unclear. Health professionals generally recommend nicotine replacement therapy and counselling as safer alternatives.
