Vizhinjam International Seaport has received its first import container, marking a significant milestone in Kerala’s maritime trade. The container arrived on October 31, 2026, aboard the vessel MSC Sabrina III from Ningbo, China.
The consignment was booked by Thiruvananthapuram-based BSG Logistics and Ship Chandlers Pvt Ltd on behalf of the Altair Group. It contains engineered building boards used in the construction sector as an alternative to conventional plywood.

With direct import operations now underway, goods can be unloaded at Vizhinjam, cleared through customs and transported to markets across Kerala. This is expected to reduce dependence on other ports while cutting cargo transportation time and costs.
The development could also help retain more revenue within Kerala through cargo handling and logistics activities. It is expected to create employment opportunities in customs brokerage, freight forwarding, transportation, warehousing and other port-related services.
The milestone follows the commencement of full-scale export-import (EXIM) operations at Vizhinjam in August 2026. The port is now expanding its role beyond transshipment to serve businesses that need direct access to international cargo services.
