Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to begin full export-import operations on August 18, marking a significant shift in the role of Kerala’s deep-water port.
Until now, Vizhinjam has primarily functioned as an international transshipment hub. With final Customs clearance secured, the port can now handle gateway EXIM cargo under the Customs Act. Import operations will initially focus on Full Container Load containers for Direct Port Delivery, while export operations will focus on factory-stuffed, self-sealed FCL containers.

The launch will also coincide with Mission Samudra, a port-led industrial and logistics development initiative aimed at positioning Vizhinjam as the anchor of a wider maritime economic region.
The transition to direct EXIM operations is expected to strengthen Kerala’s connection to global trade routes and create new opportunities for exporters, importers, logistics companies and other businesses.
The development comes as Vizhinjam continues to expand its position as a major container hub. The port has already handled more than 1.3 million TEUs and accommodated 41 ultra-large container vessels, according to Adani Ports’ disclosures.
With EXIM operations now beginning, Vizhinjam is poised to play a larger role in Kerala’s trade, logistics and maritime economy.
