The debate began after West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said the party would work to bring the Tata Group back to Bengal, referring to the controversial exit of the Tata Nano project from Singur in 2008.

In response, O’Brien listed multiple Tata Group investments and expansion projects already operating in the state. He said Tata Consultancy Services employs more than 54,000 professionals in Kolkata and is developing another 20-acre campus in the Bengal Silicon Valley Hub.

He also highlighted the expansion of Tata Hitachi into large-scale mining machinery manufacturing, while noting that Tata Metaliks completed a ₹600 crore expansion before merging with Tata Steel.

According to O’Brien, Tata Group hospitality brands including Taj Hotels, Vivanta, SeleQtions, and Ginger already operate multiple hotels in Kolkata and other parts of Bengal. He also pointed to the expansion of Tanishq, Westside, and Starbucks across the state.
