Kenyan President William Ruto said the government plans to bring in two new companies to take over operations linked to Tata Chemicals at the Magadi Soda factory.
In late July, Tata had said the Kenyan government directed its subsidiary, Tata Chemical Limited, to suspend operations at the Magadi Soda plant and halt soda ash exports.
Speaking during a visit to Kajiado in southern Kenya, Ruto criticised Tata’s long-standing presence in the region, saying the company had held the contract for 100 years but had not built a factory or other major facilities in Kajiado.
Ruto said the government plans to bring in a new company to establish a large glass manufacturing facility in the area, along with another company focused on chemical production.
Tata Chemicals was not immediately available for comment on Ruto’s remarks or the government’s decision.
