Expanding High-Value Processing in Kerala
Synthite, a global leader in spice and plant-based extracts, plans to continue expanding in Kerala. However, instead of large-scale manufacturing, the company will focus on high-value product processing.
“Kerala does not offer opportunities for large-scale manufacturing, but we see strong potential in bio-manufacturing and non-solvent-based extractions. These require high precision and advanced technology,” said Aju Jacob.
Challenges in Traditional Extraction
Synthite’s expansion in standard solvent extraction remains limited due to the scarcity of raw materials. However, the market is shifting toward cleaner and functional ingredients, where quality and sustainability matter more than just cost.
“The demand for cleaner food ingredients is market-driven. Consumers today are willing to pay more for higher-quality extractions, especially when ingredients are used for both flavor and health benefits,” he explained.
Cleaner, Sustainable Ingredients Over Organic
The future of the food industry lies in contaminant-free ingredients rather than fully organic products. Aju Jacob noted that while organic food is an ambitious goal, soil contamination and agricultural practices make it difficult to achieve immediately.
“Instead of organic, the industry will move towards minimally contaminated or contaminant-free ingredients, ensuring they stay within permissible limits,” he said. “It will take at least 5-10 years for soil quality and farming practices to improve significantly.”
