Indian Railways is moving to four-track around 11,000 km of its seven high-density routes to significantly increase passenger and freight capacity.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said these routes account for around 41% of total railway traffic while covering just 16% of the network.
The seven routes include Delhi–Howrah, Howrah–Chennai, Chennai–Mumbai, Mumbai–Delhi, Delhi–Chennai, Mumbai–Howrah and Delhi–Guwahati.
The expansion is aimed at reducing congestion and supporting the growing movement of passengers and goods. It is also expected to improve the efficiency of rail transport and strengthen India’s logistics network.
