The University of Liverpool has officially opened its first campus in South India, marking a new milestone in UK-India higher education collaboration. Located at Alembic City in Whitefield, Bengaluru, the campus welcomed nearly 300 students for its inaugural academic cohort on October 15, 2026.

The opening ceremony was attended by Karnataka Industries Minister M. B. Patil, Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram, University of Liverpool Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Jones and former Liverpool FC player Robbie Fowler, among other officials and industry representatives. The campus is the first Russell Group university campus in Karnataka.
Five Initial Areas of Study
The Bengaluru campus will initially offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in five areas:
- Computer Science
- Game Design
- Business Management
- Accounting and Finance
- Biomedical Sciences
The university said the programmes combine academic learning with industry engagement, practical experience and opportunities for global exposure. The campus features smart classrooms, research and innovation spaces, collaboration hubs, specialised laboratories and access to Bloomberg terminals.
Strengthening UK-India Education Links
The Bengaluru campus builds on the University of Liverpool’s existing academic and research connections with India. The institution aims to deepen partnerships with local universities, businesses and research organisations, creating opportunities for collaboration across education, innovation and industry.
Research areas under consideration include artificial intelligence and clean energy, according to The Economic Times. Karnataka Industries Minister M. B. Patil highlighted the importance of collaboration between international universities, local colleges and industries.
The university received formal approval from India’s University Grants Commission in June 2026 to establish its Bengaluru campus. The approval followed preparations related to academic programmes, infrastructure and regulatory requirements.
Expanding International Higher Education in India
The campus reflects the growing presence of foreign universities in India under the regulatory framework introduced through the National Education Policy 2020. The policy aims to expand access to higher education and strengthen international academic partnerships.
For students in Karnataka and neighbouring states, the Bengaluru campus offers the opportunity to study programmes from a UK university without relocating overseas. The university also plans to expand its academic offerings over time, while developing research partnerships and stronger links with employers.
The launch adds to Bengaluru’s position as a centre for technology, research and education, connecting international academic programmes with India’s growing demand for specialised skills.
