Meta has agreed to pay up to $16.7 billion as part of a major US settlement over allegations that Facebook and Instagram were designed to keep young users engaged and exposed children to harmful content. Meta denies wrongdoing.

The agreement will bring significant changes for users under 18. Teen accounts will face a default two-hour daily usage limit, along with overnight restrictions between midnight and 6 a.m. Parental controls will also be strengthened.
Other measures include stronger age verification, tighter protections from inappropriate content and adults, hidden like counts and restrictions on certain features such as cosmetic filters.
The settlement still requires judicial approval and is currently focused on the US market.
