Cognizant Technology Solutions is reportedly in discussions to invest in Indian artificial intelligence startup Sarvam AI in a funding round that could value the company at $3.5 billion to $4 billion. The proposed investment comes as the Bengaluru-based startup seeks to raise around $300 million in fresh capital to expand its AI technology and enterprise business.

According to reports citing people familiar with the discussions, Cognizant may acquire a small stake in Sarvam. The talks are ongoing, and the investment has not been finalised. If completed at the proposed valuation, Sarvam’s worth would more than double from its previous $1.5 billion valuation.
Sarvam AI’s $300 Million Fundraise
Sarvam AI is seeking to raise approximately $300 million to strengthen its AI model development, computing infrastructure and enterprise offerings. In June 2026, the startup raised $234 million in the first close of its Series B funding round, which valued it at $1.5 billion.
HCLTech led that round with an investment of approximately $150 million, acquiring a 10.5% stake in the startup. Other investors included Bessemer Venture Partners and existing backers Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners.
If Cognizant joins the latest funding round, it would become the second major IT services company to invest in Sarvam, highlighting growing interest among technology companies in India’s domestic AI ecosystem.
Why Cognizant Is Looking at Sarvam AI
The potential investment comes as global IT services companies reassess their business models amid rapid advances in generative and agentic AI. AI systems are increasingly capable of automating software development, application maintenance and back-office operations, putting pressure on traditional outsourcing models.
Cognizant has indicated that investments and acquisitions could help it transition towards a platform-led business focused on delivering technology-driven outcomes. An investment in Sarvam could strengthen its access to locally developed AI models and enterprise applications.
The company is also exploring opportunities to expand its AI capabilities as customers increasingly seek solutions that improve productivity, reduce costs and automate complex business processes.
Sarvam’s Push into Enterprise and Sovereign AI
Founded in 2023 by Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan, Sarvam AI develops foundational AI models, computing infrastructure and enterprise applications designed for Indian requirements.
The startup focuses on multilingual AI capabilities, data security and applications tailored to businesses and government agencies. Its products include models for document processing, speech recognition and text-to-speech generation across Indian languages.
Sarvam is also expanding its enterprise customer base, with reported clients including Life Insurance Corporation of India, SBI Life, IDFC First Bank, Tata Capital and CRED. The company is investing in its technology stack and infrastructure as it competes with global AI companies such as OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.
Growing Corporate Investment in India’s AI Sector
The proposed Cognizant investment reflects a wider trend of IT services companies and large enterprises investing in AI startups to access new technologies and strengthen their competitive position.
For Indian AI companies, strategic investments from established technology firms can provide capital, enterprise relationships and opportunities to deploy AI solutions at scale. Sarvam’s focus on Indian languages and locally relevant applications could help it address demand from domestic businesses and public-sector organisations.
However, the Cognizant investment remains under discussion. The final funding amount, valuation and terms will depend on the outcome of negotiations.
