Noel N. Tata will step down as chairman and director of Trent Limited on November 11, ending his 29-year association with the Tata Group’s retail company. The company’s board has appointed Bahram Vakil as his successor, effective November 12, 2026.

Tata, who joined Trent in 1997, will assume the position of chairman emeritus from November 12 in recognition of his contribution to the company. The leadership transition is in line with the Tata Group Governance Guidelines, which prescribe requirements relating to board composition and director retirement.
Trent announced the changes following a board meeting on October 29. The board also approved the appointment of Rajiv Dube as an additional non-executive, non-independent director from October 30, subject to shareholder approval. Kalpana Merchant has been appointed an additional director and independent director for a three-year term, also subject to shareholder approval.
Bahram Vakil to Lead Trent
Bahram Vakil, co-founder of law firm AZB & Partners, will take over as Trent chairman on November 12. His appointment marks a leadership change as the retailer continues to expand its presence across fashion, lifestyle, food and grocery businesses.
Trent operates popular retail brands such as Westside and Zudio, along with its Star food and grocery business. The company has been expanding its store network, particularly through Zudio, which has strengthened its presence in India’s value-fashion market.
Trent Reports Strong Q2 Performance
The leadership transition comes as Trent reports strong financial performance for the September quarter of FY27. Its consolidated net profit increased 25% year-on-year to ₹468 crore, while revenue rose 22% to ₹5,873 crore.
During his tenure, Noel Tata provided strategic direction to Trent and played a significant role in strengthening its market position and expanding its retail operations. The board acknowledged his contribution to the company’s growth over the past 29 years.
Tata is also the chairman of Tata Trusts, the majority shareholder in Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. His retirement from Trent’s board marks another leadership transition within the group’s businesses as he approaches the age of 70.
