Lieutenant Athira Suresh of Kozhikode, Kerala, has taken an unconventional career path, leaving a corporate role at global energy major ExxonMobil to join the Indian Army.
Athira, a Civil Engineering graduate from the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut), was commissioned into the Army on September 5, 2026, at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya. She was among the 253 officer cadets who completed the Short Service Commission (Technical) course during the academy’s 29th passing-out parade.
Before joining the Army, Athira worked as a Project Controls Engineer at ExxonMobil. She had secured the corporate position after clearing the IIT-JEE and completing her engineering degree, but chose to leave the private sector to pursue a career in uniform.
Her decision was also influenced by her family’s military background. Her father, Naik Suresh, served in the Corps of Signals, while both her grandfathers had served in the Army. Athira subsequently cleared the Services Selection Board process and underwent training at OTA Gaya through the Short Service Commission (Technical) entry.
Athira’s commissioning was part of a larger induction of 595 new officers at OTA Gaya and OTA Chennai, including 64 women. Her journey highlights a growing pathway for technically qualified professionals to enter the armed forces and pursue military service after establishing careers in the civilian sector.
