The Kerala State Water Transport Department (SWTD) is preparing to launch its first solar-powered boat in Kochi, marking another step towards greener public water transport in the state.
The initiative builds on Kerala’s experience with solar-powered vessels. The department introduced the ‘Aditya’ solar ferry in 2017, while the larger ‘Indra’ solar-electric boat began operations in Kochi waters in 2023.
The new vessel is part of SWTD’s broader efforts to reduce dependence on conventional fuel and adopt cleaner technologies across its fleet.
Solar-powered boats can help reduce fuel consumption, operating emissions and noise while making use of Kerala’s extensive network of inland waterways.
The move also strengthens Kochi’s position as a centre for clean and electric water-mobility solutions, complementing the city’s wider transition towards sustainable public transport.
Kerala has been gradually expanding the use of solar and electric vessels, with the state looking to modernise its traditional water transport network while reducing its environmental footprint.
