Speaking at the event marking the start of EXIM operations at Vizhinjam International Seaport, Ashwani Gupta, CEO and Whole-time Director of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), said the port is entering a new phase as a gateway for Indian trade and global markets.
Gupta said Vizhinjam will connect Kerala’s businesses and talent with international markets and support India’s goals of stronger trade, self-reliance and maritime growth.

Rs 16,000 Crore Phase 2 Expansion
Gupta announced that Phase 2 of the Vizhinjam project will involve an additional investment of Rs 16,000 crore.
The expansion will increase the port’s annual capacity from 1.6 million TEUs to 5.7 million TEUs.
It will include 1,200 metres of additional container berths, rail connectivity, better roads, logistics parks, warehouses and other facilities.
The expanded project is targeted for completion by December 2028 and is expected to create more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Adani Investment To Reach Rs 30,000 Crore
With the Phase 2 investment, the Adani Group’s total investment in Vizhinjam will reach around Rs 30,000 crore.
The expansion will also include bunkering facilities, a liquid jetty and an integrated logistics ecosystem.
Benefits For Exporters And Importers
Gupta said EXIM operations will give exporters a faster route to global markets.
Products such as seafood, spices, cashew, wire products and engineering goods can move more directly through Vizhinjam.
Importers will also get quicker access to raw materials, helping businesses improve their supply chains.
Boost For MSMEs
Gupta said shorter transit times can help MSMEs improve their competitiveness and cash flow.
More cargo moving through Vizhinjam could also create greater economic activity and value within Kerala.
Vizhinjam’s Strong Performance
Gupta said Vizhinjam handled more than 2.3 million TEUs in its first full year and captured nearly 30% of India’s transshipment container market.
The port has also handled ultra-large container ships measuring nearly 400 metres long.
Reducing Dependence On Foreign Ports
More than 75% of India’s container transshipment cargo is currently handled through foreign ports.
EXIM operations at Vizhinjam could reduce this dependence, shorten transit times and improve India’s supply chain efficiency.
Mission Samudra To Support Growth
Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan said the state will focus on Mission Samudra, better road and rail connectivity and more private investment to make the most of Vizhinjam’s potential.
The government has also planned Rs 3,200 crore for land acquisition for the Ring Road.
With EXIM operations now underway and Phase 2 planned, Vizhinjam is expected to become a major trade, logistics and economic hub connecting Kerala and India with global markets.
