Reliance Industries and British aerospace company Rolls Royce have announced plans to jointly develop and manufacture a combat aircraft engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme.
The proposed partnership could mark Reliance Industries’ entry into one of India’s most advanced and demanding defence technology projects. The two companies also plan to explore the creation of a dedicated aerospace gas turbine complex in India.
Proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex
The proposed facility would focus on developing India’s capabilities in aircraft propulsion and power technology. It is expected to cover a wide range of activities, including engine design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and long-term support.
The companies said the facility could eventually support the development of a complete aero-engine ecosystem in India.
However, the announcement represents a strategic intent to partner and is not a final contract for developing the AMCA engine.
Rolls Royce Brings Engine Expertise
The partnership would combine Rolls Royce’s experience in advanced propulsion and combat aircraft engines with Reliance Industries’ manufacturing, technology and project execution capabilities.
Rolls Royce has extensive experience in both military and civil aerospace engines, while Reliance is looking to expand its presence in advanced defence manufacturing and aerospace technology.
The companies aim to use their combined capabilities to strengthen India’s domestic expertise in aircraft propulsion.
Reliance Enters Aerospace Propulsion
For Reliance Industries, the proposed partnership represents a major move into aerospace propulsion technology.
Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries, said the partnership aims to combine Rolls Royce’s advanced propulsion expertise with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing scale and execution capabilities.
He said the companies want to build an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem in India and develop national capabilities in advanced propulsion technologies.
Focus on Self Reliance
Rolls Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç said the proposed partnership, along with the company’s existing capabilities and partnerships in India, could contribute to building a more self-reliant aerospace ecosystem.
The companies said the proposed complex could also create opportunities for future cooperation in defence, civil aerospace and new power and propulsion technologies.
Boost for India’s Defence Manufacturing
The proposed collaboration comes as India continues to expand domestic defence manufacturing and reduce its dependence on imported military technology.
Developing advanced combat aircraft engines remains one of the most technically challenging areas of aerospace manufacturing. If the partnership progresses, the proposed facility could help expand India’s capabilities across the aero-engine value chain and support the country’s long-term defence and aerospace ambitions.
