India is looking to strengthen its road infrastructure through greater technical cooperation with Japan, with discussions covering advanced construction methods, safer tunnels and bridges, sustainable infrastructure and digital road management. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted these priorities at the 12th session of the India-Japan Joint Working Group on Roads and Road Transportation Sector, held in New Delhi on October 15, 2026.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Indian and Japanese governments, technical institutions and industry to exchange expertise and explore opportunities for collaboration across the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of road infrastructure.
Focus on Advanced Construction Technologies
The discussions covered modern engineering techniques and construction technologies that could improve the quality, efficiency and safety of India’s road network. Tunnel and bridge engineering emerged as key areas for technical knowledge-sharing between the two countries.
The two sides also explored the use of digital technologies in road management and sustainable construction practices. The aim is to improve infrastructure planning and management while supporting safer and more efficient transport networks.
India-Japan Infrastructure Partnership
Japan has experience in advanced transport infrastructure, including complex tunnels, bridges and construction systems. Closer technical cooperation could help India assess and adopt suitable engineering practices for its expanding highway network.
Officials and industry representatives shared technical knowledge through presentations and interactive discussions. The meeting also included participation from India’s ministries of Railways and Power, reflecting a broader approach to transport and infrastructure development.
Supporting India’s Long-Term Infrastructure Goals
The discussions align with the government’s Viksit Bharat @2047 vision. Improved road connectivity is expected to support economic growth, strengthen logistics efficiency and expand access to markets and opportunities across regions.
The meeting reaffirmed India and Japan’s interest in deeper cooperation on road infrastructure. However, the discussions focused on technical exchange and exploring collaboration; no specific new construction contract or project was announced in the available statements.
