Kerala is set to add a major new asset to its maritime infrastructure as the Ponnani Shipyard, developed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), prepares to commence operations in August.
The new facility has been established to build and repair various types of vessels, expanding India’s shipbuilding capacity while strengthening Kerala’s position in the country’s maritime economy. The project is expected to cater to both domestic and international clients, supporting the growing demand for modern shipbuilding and maintenance services.

Beyond manufacturing, the shipyard is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, promote ancillary industries and boost marine engineering capabilities in the region. It is also expected to contribute to the economic development of Malappuram district by attracting investments and creating skilled jobs.
With the launch of operations, the Ponnani Shipyard marks an important milestone in Kerala’s maritime ambitions, reinforcing the state’s role in India’s expanding blue economy and shipbuilding ecosystem.
