Mother Dairy has unveiled India’s first naturally degradable milk pouch, a major sustainability initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste generated by the country’s massive dairy industry. The new packaging will be rolled out in Delhi-NCR from June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day.

The innovative pouch is designed to break down naturally in soil, eventually converting into bioavailable wax that is further decomposed by naturally occurring microorganisms, leaving no plastic residue behind. The technology was developed after more than four years of research and development.
Mother Dairy has stated that the switch to eco-friendly packaging will not result in higher milk prices for consumers. The initial rollout will cover the company’s cow milk variant, which accounts for a significant share of its milk sales in the Delhi-NCR region.
Alongside its sustainability push, Mother Dairy is targeting more than ₹24,000 crore in revenue for FY27, representing around 20% growth over the previous fiscal year. The company plans to drive growth through expansion into new markets, new dairy plants, and a broader national presence beyond its traditional Delhi-NCR stronghold.
With India generating millions of discarded milk pouches every day, industry observers view the initiative as a potentially transformative step toward more sustainable packaging practices in the dairy sector.
