Global logistics company DP World is strengthening its coastal shipping operations in India with the acquisition of a new container vessel, DP World Indus.
The company said its marine services business, Shipping Solutions, has added the vessel to its fleet to support the movement of cargo between Indian ports and strengthen domestic coastal trade.
New Vessel To Boost Coastal Cargo Movement
With a capacity of more than 2,500 TEUs, DP World Indus is expected to support the movement of containers through India’s coastal shipping network.
DP World said greater use of coastal shipping can reduce pressure on road networks while helping create more efficient, resilient and environmentally responsible supply chains.
DP World Operates Across 14 Indian Ports
DP World’s coastal shipping network currently covers 14 ports across India and operates a dedicated fleet of 10 vessels.
In 2025, the company’s coastal shipping operations handled more than 473,000 TEUs, highlighting the growing role of maritime transport in India’s domestic logistics network.
Focus On India’s Maritime Connectivity
The acquisition is part of DP World’s broader strategy to strengthen India’s trade and logistics infrastructure through investments in ports, maritime services, logistics facilities and integrated supply chain solutions.
Ganesh Raj, Global Chief Operating Officer of Marine Services at DP World, said India’s coastal shipping sector has significant potential to improve supply chain efficiency and support sustainable economic growth.
He added that the acquisition of the India-flagged DP World Indus reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening domestic maritime connectivity and providing reliable shipping services for businesses across the country.
Coastal Shipping Gains Importance
The expansion comes as India looks to increase the use of coastal and maritime transport for domestic cargo movement.
Moving more goods by sea can help reduce dependence on road transportation, ease congestion on highways and support more efficient movement of cargo between major ports and commercial centres.
With the addition of DP World Indus, DP World is set to further expand its role in India’s growing coastal shipping and domestic logistics sector.
