India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved a Rs 335 crore project to build an internal flyover at Visakhapatnam Port Authority, aimed at reducing congestion and improving cargo movement within the port.
3.584 Km Elevated Corridor Planned
The proposed 3.584 km elevated corridor will connect Convent Junction with the Dock Area inside the port.
The flyover will separate road and rail traffic, helping trucks move more smoothly and reducing delays caused by frequent railway crossings.
Project To Address Rail Crossing Delays
The port currently has nine railway level crossings that are closed around 18 times a day due to heavy train movement.
These frequent closures can lead to long queues of vehicles, increased waiting times, higher fuel consumption and additional operating costs for cargo transport.
The new elevated road is expected to provide a continuous route for road traffic while reducing conflicts between trucks and trains.
Faster Cargo Movement Expected
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the project will help speed up cargo movement and improve the overall operational efficiency of Visakhapatnam Port.
The improved road connectivity is also expected to make cargo evacuation faster and reduce bottlenecks within the port area.
Flyover To Be Completed In 30 Months
The project is scheduled to be completed within 30 months after construction begins.
Visakhapatnam Port is one of India’s major ports on the east coast and handles a wide range of cargo, including dry bulk, liquid bulk, breakbulk and other commodities.
The new flyover is expected to strengthen the port’s internal connectivity and support more efficient cargo handling and transportation.
