The Vande Bharat Express sleeper service now includes a dedicated pet box facility for passengers travelling with animals such as dogs. The provision offers a secure, enclosed compartment for pets, located at both ends of the train near the locomotive section.

The facility is designed to improve convenience for pet owners while maintaining safety and operational standards during long-distance travel.
Booking is offline and must be done at stations
As of April 2026, the pet box service cannot be booked online. Passengers are required to complete the booking process manually at railway stations.
To reserve the facility, travellers must visit the parcel or luggage office at the departure station at least three hours before the train’s scheduled departure.
Eligibility and required documents
Only passengers with confirmed train tickets are eligible to book the pet box service. Waitlisted or RAC tickets are not permitted for this facility.
Passengers must also submit essential documentation, including a recent veterinary fitness certificate issued within 24 to 48 hours before travel, along with valid vaccination records for the pet.
Charges based on weight
The cost of the pet box facility is calculated based on the weight of the animal, typically around ₹30 per kilogram. After payment, passengers are issued a luggage ticket as proof of booking.
Secure placement of pets
Pets are not allowed inside passenger coaches under this system. Instead, they are placed in a fixed, secure metal enclosure provided by the railways.
These enclosures are positioned at both ends of the train rake near the locomotive, ensuring separation from passenger seating areas while maintaining safety.
Strict usage conditions
The service comes with clear rules. Charges are non-refundable even in cases of train delay or cancellation. Additionally, generally only one pet is allowed per PNR, making advance planning important.
Availability varies by route
The pet box facility is not available on all routes and must be confirmed in advance with station authorities before travel.
It is also different from carrying pets in AC First Class compartments, which follow separate rules and conditions.
