Greenfield Iodised Salt Facility in Tamil Nadu

The company’s board has approved Rs 515 crore to set up a new iodised salt facility at Valinokkam in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. R. Mukundan, MD and CEO of Tata Chemicals, said the unit is expected to be completed within the next 36 months. The facility, designed to produce 210 kilotonnes per year of Iodised Vacuum Salt Dried (IVSD), aims to meet growing demand for high-quality iodised salt while supporting sustainable, long-term growth. Commissioning is expected by Q2 FY2029, with funding coming from a mix of internal accruals and external sources. Currently, Tata Chemicals operates an IVSD plant in Mithapur, Gujarat, with a capacity of 1.6 million tonnes per year.

Strategic Benefits of the New Plant

The Valinokkam facility will create a second manufacturing hub in South India, improving supply chain efficiency and reducing logistics costs.

Other Expansion Projects in Tamil Nadu

Tata Chemicals is also establishing a 50 KTPA precipitated silica plant in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, with an investment of Rs 775 crore. This project is expected to be commissioned by Q4 FY2028. This follows the commissioning of a pearl-grade silica unit in Cuddalore in November 2025, with a capacity of 3,000 MTPA.

Soda Ash Expansion in Gujarat

Additionally, Tata Chemicals plans to invest Rs 135 crore to set up a dense soda ash plant in Mithapur, Gujarat, with a capacity of 350 KTPA. This plant is expected to be commissioned by Q3 FY2028.
