India is seeking a larger role for domestic manufacturing in the Rafale fighter aircraft programme, underscoring its push for self-reliance in defence production. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said discussions with France have focused on expanding local industrial participation and strengthening technology partnerships.

The move aligns with India’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat strategy, which aims to boost indigenous defence capabilities while reducing dependence on imports. Officials are exploring opportunities for greater involvement of Indian companies in the production, maintenance, and supply chain ecosystem associated with the Rafale platform.
India and France have significantly expanded their defence partnership in recent years, with the Rafale fighter jet emerging as a key pillar of bilateral cooperation. The two countries are also collaborating across areas such as naval defence, aerospace technology, and advanced manufacturing.
Industry experts believe increased localisation could help develop India’s aerospace ecosystem, create high-skilled jobs, and enhance technology transfer opportunities for domestic firms.
The push for greater local manufacturing comes as India continues to strengthen its defence industrial base and position itself as a major global hub for advanced defence production.
