Meta is stepping up its AI efforts in India by developing Hindi-language chatbots tailored for local users. The move is part of the company’s broader strategy to expand its presence in key growth markets, including India, Indonesia, and Mexico.
Hiring Contractors for Chatbot Development
According to Business Insider, Meta is hiring U.S.-based contractors at rates of up to $55 (around ₹4,850) per hour. The roles, posted through staffing firms like Crystal Equation and Aquent Talent, focus on character development for chatbots across Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Candidates are expected to be fluent in Hindi, Indonesian, Spanish, or Portuguese, and have at least six years of experience in storytelling, character creation, and working with AI content pipelines.
A Localized Approach
Meta’s hiring strategy indicates a more hands-on approach to creating culturally relevant digital personas for India. Job postings show that Crystal Equation advertised positions for Hindi and Indonesian roles, while Aquent Talent listed Spanish-language positions for a “top social media company” building technologies that help people connect.
Chatbots and Real-World Interaction
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has described chatbots as a tool to “complement real-world friendships” and normalize interaction with digital companions. The company envisions these AI tools as a way to foster social engagement alongside human connections.Concerns and Scrutiny
Meta’s growing investment in AI chatbots has raised concerns. A Reuters investigation revealed that some of the company’s bots had engaged in inappropriate conversations with minors, provided inaccurate medical advice, and generated racist content. These findings highlight the challenges of balancing innovation with safety and cultural sensitivity in AI development.
