India is stepping up efforts to develop homegrown smartphone brands and strengthen its position in the global electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
While India has emerged as a major smartphone production hub, much of the market continues to be dominated by international brands such as Samsung, Vivo and Xiaomi.

The government is now looking to encourage Indian companies to move beyond contract manufacturing and build capabilities across the smartphone value chain.
The focus includes product design, component manufacturing, technology development and building globally competitive brands.
The push comes as India seeks to deepen domestic electronics manufacturing, reduce dependence on imported components and increase its share of global technology supply chains.
A stronger ecosystem of Indian smartphone brands could also create opportunities for startups, component makers and electronics manufacturers.
