Range Rover is on the brink of launching its inaugural electric vehicle, aptly named the Range Rover Electric, marking a significant stride towards sustainable mobility. Currently undergoing rigorous testing amidst the icy expanse of Sweden’s frozen lakes, the Range Rover Electric is poised to grace showrooms in the near future.
One of the key innovations touted by Range Rover is the development of a novel traction control system, specifically calibrated to harness the capabilities of individual electric motors. Unlike traditional systems reliant on each wheel’s ABS module, this advanced technology boasts a lightning-fast response time of just 1 millisecond upon detecting slip, significantly enhancing safety on slippery surfaces and potentially elevating the vehicle’s off-road prowess.
Central to the Range Rover Electric’s performance is its in-house-built electric drive unit and battery, marking a departure from Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) previous practice of sourcing these components externally for plug-in hybrids. Externally, the electric variant bears a striking resemblance to its petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid counterparts, with the only discernible difference being the presence of a discreetly integrated battery charging port, finished in black.
Thomas Mueller, Executive Director of Product Engineering at Land Rover, emphasized the seamless integration of electric power into the Range Rover’s signature luxury, refinement, and capability. He highlighted the vehicle’s near-silent electric propulsion, promising effortlessly smooth and relaxed journeys for discerning customers.
With order books for the electric Range Rover opening at the close of 2023, JLR has affirmed its commitment to delivering a superior electric ownership experience. The vehicle will boast an 800V electrical architecture, ensuring swift charging capabilities, along with an impressive 850mm wading depth for tackling diverse terrain. Furthermore, JLR promises energy partnerships, over-the-air software updates, and intelligent technology aimed at optimizing range, cementing the Range Rover Electric’s status as a trailblazer in the electric vehicle landscape.
