At 54, when many people consider slowing down, Pradeep B J is beginning a new chapter in life by making history as the first person with 90 percent vision impairment to be appointed as Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Kannur University. He is set to take charge next week, calling the appointment his greatest achievement and a deeply emotional milestone after years of struggle.

Currently working as a statistical investigator with the Department of Economics and Statistics in Ernakulam, Pradeep’s new role marks a significant milestone not only for Kannur University but, as he believes, for the country as well.
Hailing from Kuttichal in Thiruvananthapuram, Pradeep has an academic background in journalism from the University of Kerala and a postgraduate diploma in science and development communication from C-DIT. However, his life story is defined more by resilience than qualifications.
His journey changed drastically after being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that gradually led to 90 percent vision loss by 2011, forcing him to step away from a career in visual media. What followed was not defeat but a determined reinvention of his life.
He began his government career as an office attendant and gradually moved through various departments, including public works and health, before becoming a statistical investigator. Even after years in service, he chose to attempt the PSC examination for the PRO post in 2022.
Preparing for the exam was challenging, relying on assistive tools such as screen readers, audio books, YouTube resources, and help from his wife, Bindu, who read out study materials for him. He wrote the exam at 52 with the assistance of a scribe.
Bindu, a cancer survivor, remained his strongest support throughout his journey, helping him study and encouraging him during difficult moments. Pradeep credits her as the foundation of his success.
After clearing the exam and interview, he recently received his advice memo, a moment he described as emotional and fulfilling. He also noted that this is the first time PRO appointments in Kerala universities are being made through the Public Service Commission.
With a short service period ahead, Pradeep hopes to focus on improving accessibility for visually challenged individuals in universities, including better digital access, communication tools, and inclusive systems.
His story stands as a powerful example of resilience, showing how determination and support can turn long years of struggle into a moment of achievement and hope.
