The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to make history as four of its seasoned fighter pilots have been designated as astronauts for the country’s maiden space flight, Gaganyaan, scheduled for next year. Each of these pilots boasts a remarkable flying experience of no less than 2000 hours.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the names of the selected astronauts during a recent review of the Gaganyaan mission’s progress. Group Captain Prashanth Nair, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap, and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla were honored with astronaut wings in recognition of their upcoming mission.
Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, the senior-most among the four, hails from Thiruvazhiyad, Kerala. With an extensive flying career that includes commanding a premier fighter Su-30 Squadron, Group Captain Nair brings over 3000 hours of flying experience to the mission. He is recognized as a Cat A Flying Instructor and a test pilot, having flown various fighter and transport aircraft.
Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, born in Chennai, earned prestigious accolades early in his career, including the President’s Gold Medal and Sword of Honour at the Air Force Academy. With nearly 2900 hours of flying, he is the second most experienced pilot among the selected astronauts. Group Captain Krishnan has flown a diverse range of aircraft and is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy.
Angad Pratap, the third Group Captain, is a Flying Instructor and Test Pilot with around 2000 hours of flying experience. Commissioned from the NDA, he has piloted both fighter and transporter aircraft, demonstrating versatility and expertise in his field.
Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla, a Fighter Combat Leader and Test Pilot, rounds out the quartet of astronauts. Born in Lucknow, he brings approximately 2000 hours of flying experience to the mission. Like his colleagues, Wing Commander Shukla has flown various aircraft, showcasing his proficiency in different flight environments.
The selection of these four IAF pilots for the Gaganyaan mission marks a significant milestone for India’s space exploration endeavors. With rigorous training and preparations underway, three of the pilots will embark on a journey to orbit 400 km above Earth for three days before safely returning to Indian sea waters.
The Indian Air Force spokesperson expressed immense pride in the selection of these fighter pilots, highlighting their dedication and readiness for this historic mission.
