Tamil Nadu has emerged as the biggest beneficiary of Southern Railway’s passenger service expansion during FY26. According to railway data, the state received 23 new train services linked to Tamil Nadu, along with the addition of 65 coaches to existing trains.
The expansion included new Amrit Bharat services, capacity enhancements on high-demand routes, increased train frequencies, service extensions, and additional stoppages. Tamil Nadu also strengthened its position as a key hub for Vande Bharat and other modern train services.

Kerala, meanwhile, received 14 new train services during the same period. While the state has seen investments in station modernization and new rail projects, passenger groups and policymakers have continued to demand faster progress in line doubling, capacity enhancement, and additional train services.
Southern Railway stated that the FY26 expansion focused on improving connectivity, reducing congestion, and enhancing passenger convenience across the region through new services and infrastructure upgrades.
The contrast in rail expansion between the two neighboring states has once again sparked debate on railway investment priorities and the future of rail connectivity in southern India.
