M.A. Yusuff Ali, Chairman and Managing Director of the LuLu Group International, has emerged as the wealthiest Malayali in the world, according to Forbes’ 2025 list of global billionaires. With a net worth of $5.5 billion (approximately ₹47,000 crore), Yusuff Ali ranks 32nd among Indian billionaires and 639th globally.

A Journey from Kerala to Global Retail Leadership

Born in a small village in Kerala, Yusuff Ali moved to Abu Dhabi in 1973 to assist in his uncle’s trading business. What started as a modest venture gradually expanded into one of the largest retail empires in the Gulf region. Today, LuLu Group operates more than 240 hypermarkets and malls across the Middle East, Asia, and other global markets.

In 2024, the company took a major leap by listing LuLu Retail on the Abu Dhabi stock exchange, raising $1.7 billion in its IPO.

LuLu Group: A $7.3 Billion Retail Giant

Under Yusuff Ali’s leadership, LuLu Group has grown into a $7.3 billion retail enterprise. Known as the “Middle East retail king,” he has built the brand on affordability, diversity, and innovation, catering to millions of shoppers every day.

In addition to retail, Yusuff Ali has invested in sectors like infrastructure and hospitality. He holds a minority stake in Cochin International Airport, which is the first airport in India fully powered by solar energy. His other notable assets include the iconic Waldorf Astoria in Scotland and the Great Scotland Yard Hotel in London.

Philanthropy and Social Contributions

Beyond business, Yusuff Ali has made significant contributions to society. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he donated $6.8 million and funded a 1,400-bed medical facility in Kerala to support the state’s healthcare system.

Global Influence with Deep Indian Roots

At 69, Yusuff Ali continues to be a powerful symbol of Indian entrepreneurship abroad. Based in Abu Dhabi, he is a UAE resident but maintains strong ties with Kerala, actively participating in developmental and humanitarian initiatives.

From humble beginnings to global influence, Yusuff Ali’s journey is a testament to vision, hard work, and the power of enterprise.
