Marvel Studios, in a stunning revelation at San Diego Comic-Con last week, announced the year’s biggest surprise in the movie world: Robert Downey Jr., beloved for his role as Iron Man, is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain Dr. Doom.
Downey, who portrayed Iron Man from 2008 to 2019, was the central figure in nearly a dozen Marvel films, becoming the face of the franchise. His character’s poignant death in “Avengers: Endgame” is still celebrated as one of the best farewells for an actor and character in cinematic history.
The unexpected announcement came from the Russo Brothers, directors of “Avengers: Endgame,” who revealed that Downey will take on the role of Dr. Victor Von Doom. He is set to appear as the antagonist in “Avengers: Doomsday,” slated for release in 2025. Fans on social media are abuzz, anticipating Downey’s portrayal of Dr. Doom to be one of Marvel’s best villains ever.
Financially, Downey’s return marks a significant increase in his remuneration. Previously the highest-paid actor in the MCU, earning $75 million for “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” Downey will now receive a record-breaking $100 million (₹837 crores) for his role as Dr. Doom, according to Variety.
Additionally, the Russo Brothers have also secured a lucrative deal, with Marvel contracting them for $80 million (₹650 crores) to direct two upcoming Avengers films.
Marvel fans eagerly await “Avengers: Doomsday” to see how Robert Downey Jr. reinvents himself as Dr. Doom, promising a thrilling new chapter in the MCU.
