The Tamil Nadu government has doubled accident insurance coverage for registered gig workers from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh, strengthening financial protection for workers in the gig economy.
The state has also launched Vettri Karangal, a new programme aimed at helping construction workers secure employment opportunities overseas. Under the initiative, 1,000 registered construction workers will receive international-level skill training at a cost of ₹15 crore.
Tamil Nadu will also provide seven-day skill training to 50,000 registered construction workers in trades including masonry, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing and painting. Workers will receive ₹800 per day as wage-loss compensation during the training period, with ₹48 crore allocated for the programme.
The government will additionally bear interest on bank loans taken by 1,000 registered gig workers to purchase e-bikes. Temporary shelters for migrant construction workers and 50 worker facilitation centres are also planned in Chennai and Coimbatore metropolitan areas.
