India has started taking concrete steps to explore participation in an international sixth-generation fighter aircraft programme, marking a major shift in the country’s long-term military aviation planning.

Defence Ministry Seeks Roadmap for Sixth Generation Jets
According to The Times of India, the Ministry of Defence has initiated efforts to associate India with a global next-generation fighter programme and has sought a roadmap for the acquisition and development of sixth-generation combat aircraft.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has recommended that India begin planning for sixth-generation capabilities now instead of waiting for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft to enter service.
AMCA to Remain India’s Fifth Generation Fighter
India’s move towards a sixth-generation programme is not expected to replace the indigenous AMCA project.
The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft is being developed as India’s fifth-generation stealth fighter, while participation in an international sixth-generation programme could provide access to technologies that may take significantly longer and cost more to develop independently.
India Exploring Two Global Fighter Programmes
India is examining two major international sixth-generation fighter initiatives.
One is the Global Combat Air Programme involving the UK, Italy and Japan. The other is the Franco-German-led Future Combat Air System programme, involving France, Germany and Spain.
The Indian Air Force has indicated that it intends to explore participation in one of these international programmes at an early stage to ensure India does not fall behind in next-generation combat aviation.
France Could Be an Important Partner
The French option could be particularly important given the growing defence and industrial relationship between India and France.
India is already pursuing the acquisition of 114 Rafale fighter jets, with France having submitted its technical and commercial proposal following India’s Letter of Request.
The Rafale programme could involve significant local manufacturing and technology transfer, potentially creating an aerospace industrial base that could support more advanced fighter programmes in the future.
Sixth Generation Fighters Will Use Advanced Technology
Sixth-generation combat aircraft are expected to go beyond traditional stealth fighter capabilities.
Future systems are likely to combine artificial intelligence, advanced sensor fusion, autonomous operations, electronic warfare, long-range weapons, adaptive propulsion and highly connected combat networks.
These aircraft are also expected to operate alongside unmanned combat aircraft, autonomous wingmen, surveillance platforms and distributed sensors, turning the fighter into the central element of a wider combat system.
Early Participation Could Benefit India
For India, joining a sixth-generation programme during its development phase could offer greater advantages than simply buying completed aircraft later.
Indian companies and research organisations could potentially participate in areas such as aircraft design, avionics, software, propulsion, weapons integration and manufacturing.
However, the extent of Indian involvement would depend on negotiations covering technology transfer, intellectual property, industrial workshare and decision-making rights.
China and Other Powers Drive the Urgency
The push comes as major military powers accelerate their next-generation fighter programmes.
The United States is developing its own next-generation combat aircraft, while European and Japanese-led programmes are targeting operational capabilities during the 2030s and 2040s.
China’s rapid development of advanced combat aircraft is also increasing the urgency for India to plan beyond its current fifth-generation ambitions.
India Seeks More Than Just Buying a Foreign Fighter
A key challenge for India will be ensuring that participation in an international programme does not leave the country merely as a customer.
If India eventually joins FCAS, GCAP or another sixth-generation fighter consortium, New Delhi would need to secure meaningful industrial participation and access to advanced technologies.
Such an arrangement could strengthen India’s domestic aerospace capabilities while supporting the country’s long-term goal of developing increasingly advanced combat aircraft.
