Vizhinjam International Seaport has welcomed its 1,000th commercial vessel, marking another significant milestone in the port’s rapid growth journey. The achievement comes less than two years after operations began, underlining the port’s emergence as a major player in global container transshipment.
According to recent operational data, the port has already handled more than 20 lakh TEUs since commencing operations in July 2024. The arrival of the 1,000th vessel highlights the increasing preference among global shipping lines for Vizhinjam as a transshipment destination.

Located just a short distance from one of the world’s busiest east-west shipping lanes, Vizhinjam offers a strategic advantage for international maritime trade. The port has established direct connectivity with major global trade routes spanning Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Far East.
The seaport has also gained attention for handling some of the world’s largest container vessels and achieving record cargo throughput in a short period. Its performance has strengthened Kerala’s position on the global maritime map and boosted India’s ambitions of becoming a leading transshipment hub.
With additional investments and expansion projects underway, Vizhinjam is expected to significantly increase its capacity over the coming years, further enhancing its role in international shipping and logistics.
