V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, has unveiled plans to invest ₹5,720 crore in a major harbour deepening project aimed at accommodating larger cargo vessels and enhancing operational efficiency.

The proposed expansion will increase the port’s draft depth, enabling it to handle next-generation container ships and larger bulk carriers that currently face restrictions due to depth limitations. The project is expected to significantly improve the port’s competitiveness in the global shipping industry.
Port authorities believe the deepening initiative will help attract more international shipping lines, increase cargo throughput, and reduce logistics costs for exporters and importers. The project is also expected to strengthen VOC Port’s position as a key transshipment and trade gateway on India’s east coast.
The investment forms part of a broader strategy to modernize port infrastructure and support the country’s growing maritime trade ambitions. By accommodating larger vessels, the port aims to improve turnaround times, enhance efficiency, and create opportunities for future industrial and economic growth in the region.
Once completed, the harbour deepening project is expected to play a crucial role in boosting India’s logistics capabilities and supporting the government’s vision of transforming the country into a major global maritime hub.
