Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has strengthened its aviation safety infrastructure with the induction of Kerala’s first High Reach Extendable Turret (HRET)-equipped crash fire tender. The advanced Rosenbauer Panther vehicle marks a major upgrade in Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting capabilities at the airport.

Unlike conventional airport firefighting systems, the HRET technology can extend and pierce an aircraft fuselage, allowing firefighters to spray water, foam, or extinguishing agents directly inside passenger cabins and cargo sections during emergencies. The system is designed to improve response speed and significantly enhance passenger survivability during aircraft fire incidents.
The vehicle is equipped with advanced thermal imaging cameras that help firefighters detect hidden fires and hotspots inside enclosed aircraft spaces. When fully extended, the HRET can reach up to 16.5 metres in height and project water up to 85 metres in both jet and spray modes.
The Rosenbauer Panther carries 11,300 litres of water, 1,300 litres of foam, and 250 kilograms of Dry Chemical Powder. Powered by a 700-horsepower Volvo engine, the crash fire tender can accelerate from 0 to 80 kmph in under 30 seconds and reach speeds of up to 120 kmph.
Airport officials said the induction reinforces Thiruvananthapuram Airport’s commitment to global aviation safety standards while further strengthening emergency response capabilities for passengers, airlines, and airport operations.
