U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday that Washington is in active discussions with India to expand energy cooperation, a key topic expected to feature in his upcoming meetings in New Delhi during his visit from May 23 to 26.

Speaking to reporters in Miami before departing for Sweden and India, Rubio said the United States is ready to supply as much energy as India is willing to purchase, pointing to record levels of U.S. oil and gas production and exports.
He added that talks with India on strengthening energy ties were already underway, with both sides exploring ways to increase India’s share of U.S. energy supplies. Rubio also noted potential opportunities involving Venezuelan crude as part of broader energy diversification efforts.
Describing India as a “great partner” and “key ally,” he said the visit would be important for deepening cooperation and engaging with Indian leaders as well as counterparts from Quad nations during scheduled meetings in India.
Rubio also highlighted that his trip would include discussions with ministers from the Quad grouping, recalling that his first meeting as Secretary of State was also with the Quad, and expressing interest in continued coordination.
In addition, he mentioned that Venezuela’s interim leadership is expected to visit India next week, suggesting further openings for energy-related engagement with New Delhi.
Overall, Rubio emphasized that the United States sees significant scope to expand its strategic and energy partnership with India across multiple areas.
