India is reportedly preparing a major expansion of Water Metro transport systems to 18 cities across the country, aiming to strengthen sustainable urban mobility and reduce pressure on road transport infrastructure.

According to reports, the proposed plan is inspired by the successful rollout of the Kochi Water Metro, India’s first integrated water-based public transport network. The project combines electric boats, modern terminals, and multimodal urban connectivity solutions.
Officials believe water-based transport systems could help improve urban mobility in cities with rivers, lakes, backwaters, and coastal waterways while reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions.
Experts say the expansion reflects growing interest in green transportation infrastructure and smart city mobility solutions. The initiative could also support tourism, regional connectivity, and sustainable urban development in multiple states.
The Kochi Water Metro project has gained international attention for integrating clean energy transport with public transit planning, and analysts believe its success could pave the way for similar systems in other major Indian cities.
