At the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library in Delhi, visitors are now experiencing a digital version of Mahatma Gandhi that can respond to questions in real time through an AI powered Holobox.

The life sized 3D avatar of Gandhi ji interacts with visitors on topics such as governance, ethics, society and India’s freedom movement. During NDTV’s visit, the installation demonstrated how it can answer questions in a conversational style, creating an immersive learning experience.
Museum officials said this is the first AI based interactive Gandhi avatar of its kind in the country. Built using artificial intelligence, voice systems and historical archives, the system is designed to simulate realistic dialogue using Gandhi ji’s recorded speeches, writings and documented views.
PMML Chairperson Nripendra Misra explained that the aim is to preserve Gandhi’s spirit of inquiry while making history more engaging for visitors. He noted that the system was trained over months using thousands of curated questions covering a wide range of subjects.
According to officials, the AI model currently supports interaction in two languages and allows visitors to directly ask questions and receive responses based on verified historical material.
The museum team said the project is part of a broader effort to modernise public history spaces and attract younger audiences through immersive technology. Similar AI based Holoboxes featuring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and A P J Abdul Kalam have already been installed, with plans to add Atal Bihari Vajpayee next.
Inside the Anubhuti section of the museum, visitors gather around the installation as the digital Gandhi speaks and responds, creating a near lifelike experience that blends history with modern technology.
