India’s urban transport ecosystem has undergone a major transformation over the past two decades, driven largely by the rapid expansion of metro rail systems. Leading this transformation is the Delhi Metro, which remains the largest metro network in India, covering nearly 395 km of operational routes and connecting key residential, commercial and industrial hubs across Delhi and adjoining regions.

Launched in 2002, the Delhi Metro introduced world-class rapid transit standards to India. Known for punctuality, cleanliness and technological efficiency, it has become a model for metro projects across cities such as Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kochi.

Collectively, India’s metro rail network has now surpassed 1,000 km in total operational length, placing the country among the world’s top three metro systems. Continuous expansion projects, new corridors and improved last-mile connectivity underline India’s commitment to sustainable mobility, reduced traffic congestion and lower urban pollution levels.
