Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani following Israeli strikes in Doha. Modi expressed deep concern and condemned what he called a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty.

Call for Dialogue and Restraint
The Prime Minister underlined that India supports resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy, while stressing the need to prevent further escalation. In a post on X, he said India stands for peace, stability, and opposition to terrorism in all forms.
Recognition of Qatar’s Role
Modi acknowledged Qatar’s efforts to promote regional peace, including its mediation in Gaza aimed at achieving a ceasefire and securing the release of hostages.
Rare Rebuke of Israel
This marks a rare, high-level criticism of Israeli actions by India, highlighting the value New Delhi places on ties with Qatar. Israel has claimed responsibility for the strikes, saying they targeted Hamas leaders.
Personal Ties Between Leaders
Modi and Al-Thani share a close rapport. Last year, Al-Thani pardoned eight Indian Navy veterans accused of spying, a gesture that strengthened bilateral trust. During his visit to India earlier this year, both countries elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership.
India’s Balancing Act
India has generally supported Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas. At the same time, it has condemned civilian deaths in Gaza and stressed adherence to international humanitarian law. At the recent SCO summit, India joined members in condemning Israel and US strikes on Iran.
Stronger Message to Israel
While India initially limited itself to calls for restraint, Modi’s latest remarks went further. According to a Qatari readout, he affirmed solidarity with Qatar, called the Israeli strike a “cowardly attack,” and described it as a threat to Qatar’s security and to regional stability.
Qatar’s Response
Amir Al-Thani said Qatar would take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty. He thanked Modi for India’s solidarity and support during the crisis.
