Sunjay Kapur, chairman of Sona Comstar—one of the world’s top auto component makers—passed away at 53 after a heart attack during a polo match in London. His sudden death has led to turbulence in business circles and raised immediate questions about leadership and inheritance. Sona Comstar, which he led since 2015 after his father’s passing, has a market capitalization of nearly ₹31,000 crore ($4 billion).

Immediate Market Reaction

Following the news, Sona Comstar’s shares fell by 7% as investors reacted to the uncertainty around leadership. In response, the company issued a statement expressing confidence in maintaining business continuity and honouring Kapur’s legacy.

No Clear Successor Identified

Kapur leaves behind three children. His older children, Samaira (20) and Kiaan (14), from his marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor, and Azarias (6), with his current wife Priya Sachdev, are all minors or uninvolved in the business. At present, there is no official announcement about who will take over at Sona Comstar. Reports suggest his sisters may play a more active role, while the company’s board is expected to guide interim leadership.

Net Worth and Inheritance Plan

Sunjay Kapur had a net worth of ₹10,300 crore ($1.2 billion), with peak wealth recorded at ₹13,000 crore ($1.6 billion) in recent years. His estate is reportedly managed by Priya Sachdev, his wife since 2017. Legacy provisions had also been made for his children with Karisma Kapoor—each reportedly receiving bonds worth ₹14 crore and a monthly income of ₹10 lakh.

Personal and Marital History

Kapur had been married three times—first to Nandita Mahtani (1996–2000), then to Karisma Kapoor (2003–2016), and later to Priya Sachdev. He and Karisma have two children together. His high-profile marriages, especially with Karisma, had long kept him in the public eye alongside his business prominence.

Legacy of Leadership

Under Sunjay Kapur’s leadership, Sona Comstar expanded its global reach and became a key player in the auto components industry. His passing marks the end of an era, and his absence has created a vacuum at the top of the company. The firm is now expected to navigate a period of transition while upholding the strategic vision he laid down.

Outlook for Sona Comstar

While the board works on succession plans, Sona Comstar has reassured stakeholders that its core operations and future plans remain intact. The coming months will be critical as the company balances its long-term goals with the immediate challenge of replacing a visionary leader.
