US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit India from October 17 to 22, as New Delhi and Washington continue efforts to advance their strategic partnership and resolve differences over a proposed bilateral trade agreement.

According to the US Department of State, Rubio will meet senior Indian government officials to discuss bilateral relations, regional and global developments, and opportunities for expanded energy cooperation. He will also engage with business leaders to explore investment opportunities and strengthen economic ties. His itinerary includes Mumbai and Jamnagar in Gujarat.
The visit comes as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has expressed cautious optimism about the progress of India-US trade negotiations. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, Jaishankar said the discussions were heading towards a possible “landing point”, with officials working to resolve outstanding issues.
However, he noted that the outcome would also depend on the terms the United States offers to other competing economies. Differences over tariffs, market access and the competitiveness of Indian exports remain important factors in the negotiations.
The trade discussions have faced uncertainty in recent months. US tariff policies and India’s efforts to protect sensitive domestic sectors have complicated negotiations. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said earlier in October that the talks had reached a plateau, highlighting the challenges in resolving the remaining differences.
Rubio’s visit follows his trip to India in May, when discussions with Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi covered trade, defence, energy, maritime security and regional developments. The earlier meetings also highlighted efforts to advance an interim trade agreement as a step towards a broader bilateral deal.
Energy cooperation is expected to be another key focus during the upcoming visit. Rubio’s planned stop in Jamnagar is notable because the city houses Reliance Industries’ major refining complex. The broader discussions could provide an opportunity to explore closer energy and investment ties between the two countries.
While Jaishankar’s remarks indicate progress, neither side has announced a final trade agreement. Rubio’s visit is expected to provide another opportunity for both countries to address outstanding issues and strengthen their economic and strategic partnership.
