Indian Railways operates Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains to serve passengers with different travel needs and budgets. While Vande Bharat focuses on modern, air-conditioned travel, Amrit Bharat provides a more affordable option for long-distance journeys with General and Sleeper Class accommodation.

Coaches and Accommodation
Vande Bharat Chair Car trains offer air-conditioned Chair Car and Executive Chair Car seating. The Vande Bharat Sleeper variant provides fully air-conditioned sleeper accommodation for long-distance travel.
Amrit Bharat is a fully non-AC train. Its standard configuration includes 11 General Class coaches, eight Sleeper Class coaches, one Pantry Car and two luggage-cum-divyangjan coaches.
Speed and Technology
Vande Bharat has a design speed of 180 kmph and an operating speed of up to 160 kmph, depending on the route and railway infrastructure. Its self-propelled trainset design supports faster acceleration.
Amrit Bharat uses a push-pull configuration, with locomotives at both ends. It is designed to improve acceleration and provide faster long-distance travel while keeping fares relatively affordable. Actual journey times for both trains depend on route conditions, signalling and operational factors.
Fare Differences
Amrit Bharat offers separate fares for Second Class and Sleeper Class. For a journey covering 991–1,000 km, the published basic fares are ₹324 for Second Class and ₹538 for Sleeper Class, before additional charges.
For Vande Bharat Sleeper, the basic 3AC fare was specified at ₹2.40 per passenger-kilometre, excluding GST, according to the Railway Ministry in March 2026. This works out to an indicative basic fare of ₹2,400 for a 1,000-km journey, before applicable charges.
Actual ticket prices vary by distance, class, route and other applicable charges.
Passenger Facilities
Vande Bharat features include Kavach safety technology, CCTV cameras, automatic plug doors, emergency alarms, talk-back systems and enhanced fire-safety arrangements.
Amrit Bharat trains also offer modern passenger amenities, including CCTV cameras, improved toilets, LED lighting, charging sockets, USB Type-A and Type-C ports, emergency talk-back systems and fire-suppression systems.
Which Train Suits Your Needs?
Vande Bharat caters to passengers seeking air-conditioned seating or sleeper accommodation with a premium travel experience. Amrit Bharat is designed for passengers who prioritise affordability and prefer General or non-AC Sleeper Class travel.
The two train categories offer different combinations of comfort, speed, facilities and fares, giving passengers more options for long-distance journeys.
