Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a state-owned shipbuilding company, has received orders to build more than 40 ships from overseas customers, including those in the United States, Germany and Norway, Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on October 8.

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Sonowal said the orders reflect growing international confidence in India’s shipbuilding capabilities. He added that the government is working to create a supportive ecosystem to strengthen the country’s shipbuilding industry.
The minister said Indian shipbuilders are gaining global recognition for their production quality and capacity. The overseas orders mark an important opportunity for India to expand its presence in the international shipbuilding market.
A senior ministry official also said some Russian entities have expressed interest in building ships in India in collaboration with domestic shipyards, including Cochin Shipyard.
Belgium has also indicated its willingness to work with India to promote shipbuilding, potentially opening up further opportunities for industrial cooperation.
The announcements came during the third edition of Sagarmanthan – The Ocean Dialogue, where India also held discussions with partner countries on port investments, green shipping and regional connectivity.
As India works to strengthen its maritime infrastructure and domestic manufacturing capabilities, overseas shipbuilding contracts could support industrial growth, create opportunities for local suppliers and enhance the country’s position in global maritime trade.
