Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the two countries are making good progress on a new trade agreement, signalling a further thaw in bilateral relations.
Ties between India and Canada deteriorated sharply after the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar near Vancouver. Canada had alleged Indian involvement in the killing, a charge New Delhi denied. The diplomatic dispute later led both countries to expel diplomats.
Since taking office, Carney has sought to rebuild relations with India, highlighting the importance of the country’s large and growing market as Canada looks to diversify its global trade.
Speaking at the United Nations, Carney said the two sides are targeting mid-December to finalize a new trade deal and said he looks forward to hosting Modi.
India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, also indicated that the visit could see agreements in areas including defence and aerospace.
The two countries are also expected to announce further initiatives under their Talent and Innovation Strategy, aimed at strengthening education and innovation ties.
India exports pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, seafood and electronic goods to Canada, while Canada supplies India with pulses, coal and fertilisers.
