A new Water Metro terminal near the Ernakulam Boat Jetty is expected to be ready within a year, adding another major facility to Kochi’s growing water transport network. The project has an estimated cost of ₹32 crore.
Second Largest Water Metro Terminal
The new terminal will be the second-largest facility in the Kochi Water Metro network after the High Court terminal.
Once operations begin, passengers will be able to get direct Water Metro services from the terminal to destinations including Mattancherry, Fort Kochi, Kumbalam and Edakochi.
Construction Work Underway
Piling work for the terminal started on September 8 and is currently being carried out around the clock to speed up construction.
The terminal will follow a traditional Kerala-style architectural design. It will have two floors and cover around 18,000 square feet.
Commercial Space and Boat Facilities
The first floor of the terminal will be used for commercial activities, adding space for businesses and passenger-related services.
The project will also include two floating jetties. One jetty is planned to be completed during the first phase of the project.
Boat charging facilities and a fuel station are also planned as part of the terminal infrastructure.
More Water Metro Boats Planned
The tender process for 15 new Water Metro boats is currently in progress. The additional vessels are expected to support the expansion of services across the network.
Other Terminals Also Under Development
Work on expanding the Water Metro network is also progressing at other locations.
The tender process for the Edakochi and Varapuzha terminals is nearing completion. The Edakochi terminal is estimated to cost ₹20 crore, while the Varapuzha terminal is expected to cost around ₹16 crore.
Together, these projects are expected to strengthen Kochi’s water-based public transport network and improve connectivity between different parts of the city and nearby areas.
