India has the potential to become the world’s leading destination for setting up data centres, with a data centre investment opportunity of more than $200 billion, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday.

Speaking after chairing a roundtable on Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) aimed at expanding India’s data centre ecosystem, Goyal said the country’s strong digital capabilities and growing infrastructure could attract significant investments into the sector.
Data Centres to Drive Future Growth
Goyal said data centres, semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence and the expansion of India’s manufacturing base will play a key role in driving the country’s economic growth in the coming years.
He added that these sectors could contribute significantly to India’s long-term ambition of becoming a $30 trillion economy by 2047.
Focus on Ease of Doing Business
The roundtable brought together stakeholders from across the data centre ecosystem, including hyperscalers, cloud service providers, power producers, equipment suppliers, real estate and construction companies, global investors, private equity firms, and representatives from the central and state governments.
Discussions focused on simplifying regulations, improving digital infrastructure and creating a stronger environment for investment in India’s rapidly expanding data centre industry.
India Targets Global Data Centre Leadership
Hyperscalers, international investors and Indian companies participating in the discussions highlighted the significant potential for India to attract large-scale investments in data centres.
Goyal said India’s economic growth, digital capabilities and investor-friendly environment position the country to become a preferred global destination for data centre investments.
India Germany Partnership on Green Growth
Separately, Goyal met German Federal Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Carsten Schneider to discuss cooperation between India and Germany.
The discussions covered areas including the circular economy, waste management, renewable energy, clean technologies and sustainable solutions.
Goyal said greater cooperation between the two countries could help develop scalable green solutions, strengthen sustainable supply chains and create new opportunities for skilled workers.
