The Railway Board has assured that Kerala will not lose any railway stations following the decision to transfer the Mangaluru railway area from the Palakkad division to the Mysuru division of South Western Railway.
According to the Board, the administrative change is confined to Karnataka, while Palakkad division will retain all stations across Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad and Thrissur districts.
The Railways said the move is aimed at improving operational efficiency by bringing the Mangaluru area under a single railway zone. It cited Mangaluru’s location more than 350 km from Palakkad and the multiple railway jurisdictions currently involved in operations there.
Meanwhile, railway authorities are reportedly examining a possible compromise under which Mangaluru Central could remain with Palakkad while other Mangaluru-area stations and assets move to Mysuru division.
