Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday during his official visit to India, with both sides discussing ways to further strengthen defence and security cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, Modi highlighted the importance of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership and said stronger defence ties between the two nations can contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
The Prime Minister recalled his discussions with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during her visit to India for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in July 2026. He also welcomed the continued progress in defence cooperation between India and Japan.
Modi said there are significant opportunities for Japanese companies and start-ups to work with Indian partners in the defence sector, particularly in areas involving co-development and co-production under the Make in India initiative.
Following the meeting, Modi said both sides had a productive discussion on expanding defence and security ties and described the bilateral partnership as an important pillar for regional peace and stability.
Koizumi briefed Modi on the progress of ongoing defence cooperation and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to further deepening its strategic relationship with India.
The discussions reflect the growing focus on defence collaboration, technology partnerships, co-development, co-production and strategic cooperation between India and Japan, particularly in the wider Indo-Pacific region.
